Working to eliminate having our neighbors need to make the choice of whether to heat or eat.
At Maine Wood Bank, we are committed to providing local and renewable fuel options for our neighbors in need, while reducing our carbon footprint.
Founded in 2024, Maine Wood Bank's goal is to provide efficiency and scale
Maine is about 90% forested and is the most heavily forested State in the U.S.
About half of Maine households use wood for some of their heat.
63 towns in Maine are prime candidates for wood banks.
They have a high percentage of households where wood is a primary heat source and housing costs are a high portion of household income. (rentals are not included)
To provide free firewood for temporary fuel assistance to those in need in every community in Maine through a network of local volunteer-run wood banks. Through the network, we aim to provide resources, collaboration, scale, and support for easier establishment of local wood banks and operation of existing wood banks. Currently, Cumberland (2007), Freeport (new), and Midcoast (2023) are initially establishing the network. There are 9 other established wood banks in Maine with new ones in various forms of development.
Key areas where a network can help:
Administration: financial, legal, insurance
Purchasing: volume discounts for equipment & supplies
Training
"Wood bank in a box" for new locations
Communications- online
